I found a cat d5 for sale  the price is right 7500.00 but the only thing I know nothing about a d5 it remindes me of a hd 11 e with direct drive and oil stering clutches on the dash and non turbo  is it anything compared to the 11?

Serial numbers on the Caterpillar equipment tell it all. If it is a 1967 or newer it is a 105 horsepower machine with a weight of about 25,000 pounds.  Having owned both Cat and AC the down side of the Cat is that any maintenance on the clutches, final drives , transmission, etc. requires splitting the tracks. If it has a starting engine that could be another issue. They can be a problem. The up side is their value and their customer support. No waiting on those people for parts. They have them. We are currently restoring a 1948 212 motor grader and many of the items are available and they are reasonably priced. They make one of the finest products on the planet.
Other brands are best discussed off line.

D5s are a ok machine, very stable. were very popular in nz for agricultural work. D5 was basically a upgraded D6B. HD11B/E would be a better machine probably.
weak point of D5s were finals, drain oils and check for toothache. Have got dry steering clutchs and brakes; D5B is wet; early ones 93hp later 105. Is it ps or geardrive ?
