Last fall I picked this little A-C shredder up at a farm sale. It was in pretty average shape for a shredder, I don't think any shredder's got any extra special care ever, it had it's share of cracks and welds and all the little farmer fixes. It had a massive oil leak around the gearbox area which ended up being the input shaft seal. I had hoped that I could get by with running corn head gease in the gearbox but the seal was so bad that it wouldn't even hold grease so I had to tear into the gearbox which I really didn't want to do. I guess I ended up fixing as much as I could if I could find the parts. I ended up putting new blades and tires plus one rim and had to build a few parts also.  Blade comparision, the blades were shot.  Very little oil/grease left in the gearbox. I got it painted on Sunday and just finished up putting the decals on tonight. I plan on using this shredder around the farm still to keep the weeds down so I just did a quick paint job and used AGCO paint with hardner.    We made this chain gaurd from scratch taking measurements out of books and off the shredder, it turned out pretty good.  Custom made decals as usual.  Putting it to work right away on a weed patch.   Got that little patch done. I am still looking for the metal plate warning sign that goes behind the gearbox for this, the one on this one was missing, or if somebody can just tell me what it all says that would be great also. Looks awesome!! I would love to do that with one of ours. My oldest shredder has double blades on it. Must have been added for chopping stocks. Isn't that the model where you could move the wheels to the rear by mounting them on the inside of the lift-crossover shaft?

On this model, and maybe others, the rotating section is more or less flat, they attach two knives to each end, one is offset to provide more cutting width in the rotating section, I assume it is to chop the cut material more than with just a standard single knife. Funny the newer mowers are all starting to do this. Your mower looks great! I was mowing weeds with mine and a XT gas last week. The sign measures 16 1/4" x 3 3/8" and reads;
WARNING
KNIVES CONTINUE TO ROTATE AFTER POWER IS DISENGAGED.
BE SURE THAT ALL ROTATING PARTS HAVE STOPPED

Looks great , nice job . Like the piece on back that holds the chains. I have a couple mowers like that and have the chain on the front but never seen them on back. Thanks for posting pics. Yes the axle can be turned around so the wheels can track behind and you can get up close to a fence or trees , but puts a lot of weight on tounge. Have to use a jack to hook up and unhook. | Decals in the 7th picture are not correct, I own a couple of the originals, an AC original decal will have black and white 45 degree stripes, about 3/8" long, as a border. Not tying to pick nits, just stating what I know to be true, for the originals. Take a look at some original pics, and you will see. Good luck, I am not the show police, and don't want that as my epitaph! It is good to see someone restoring something, that I spent countless hours running, in my youth. Did the new blades you procured, match the offset, of the original blades?? I have had difficulty in finding blades that have the same offset (top bend), as the originals. I think the originals were something like 4-3/4" offset, IIRR. |
