I was wondering if anyone out there would be able to do a brief rundown of the Allis Chalmers square baler history...for example I have heard that the 302 only had two u-joints in the pto shaft which caused time consuming turns so they went to a three u-joint shaft and called it the 303...that's all I've heard and all I claim to know. I am trying to figure out which ones were twine tie and which were wire so I can start looking for "the one." Thanks,

| I am pretty sure that most if not all models were available in twine or wire versions,so model # will not tell you if it is twine or wire. The 443 and 444 were the last models built. 443 has short tongue (2 joint pto) and 444 has long tongue (3 joint pto). 444 also has a better pick-up. It has teeth spaced closer together (similar to NH super sweep) and I think it has one more row of teeth than the 443. I'm pretty sure plunger speed is same on both. Options were the same on both and included pick-up gauge wheel,toolbox,wagon hitch with bale chute. I own a 444 and bale only 6-800 bales a year and it works great. Knotters are same as NH. In fact mine has a complete NH knotter on one side. Not a real high capacity baler,but probally keep up with most balers back in their day. |

Thanks for the info, I was hoping they would have changed numbers if it were wire, but I'm sure they had their reasons so I won't hold it against them. I truly appreciate the information. At least now I know that if I ever see one on auction or listed there is a chance it could be wire tie.

We have a very well used 303, excellent baler for its age. Even with the smaller pick up on it than the 400 series balers I think it has excellent capacity. Back when it was new my dad used to work for the original owner of the baler, and they would bale 3 loads an hour, or around 350 bales an hour. ------------- 30+ A-Cs ranging from a 1928 20-35, to a 1984 8070FWA, Gleaner R52 |

| We have a 443 with a 3 jount PTO< works great (now), had local NH dealer go over knotters, now it ties every time. are you looking for wire or twine tie? |

The 303 had one extra bar in the pickup, so it picked up grassy hay cleaner. It also had more retarders in the chamber to make tighter bales over the 302. I have a 302 that we used to use at the AC Jamboree, and it worked very good. ------------- Most problems can be solved with the proper application of high explosives. |

I just got an AllisChalmer 303 square baler and am having trouble installing the string. I am new to the baling thing and need help. Hope it is easier than I am making it. I am also new to the sight so if I am posting in the wrong place sorry. |

First off welcome to the site.A lot of knowledge on here.Correct place to post, would probably get more responses to a new post. "Need Help with baler" . I just finished baling around 1000 straw bales with my 302 and tied all but 6 of them. Three because the knot where you tie the strings together got hung-up in the string tensioner. I was quit happy this year because this was the best the baler has tied since I got it, lots of tweaking.  The 303 was built before the 302.------------- been there done that, not doing it again... |

If it's like the New Holland 270 you run the twine through the little tensioner first then following and through the glass guides and the through the ends of the needles located underneath. Then tie each twin off somewhere straight rearward of the needles. If you tie them to the side you may break a needle. As far as I'm concerned, the 302 and 303 were made at the same time in history. You either bought the short tongue 302 (less $$$$$ to purchase) or the long tongue 303 (more money) and either one was wire or twine tie. |

| We just replaced the "blll hooks" on my 302 baler. The NH part # 796734 worked fine. They only required a small alteration to the gear as the hole for the "lock pin" was a little different from the original Allis. Hope this helps. |

Most of the knotter parts are interchangeable between AC and NH. Parts are also still available from AGCO as well. ------------- Thanks & God Bless Dennis |
