A couple years ago I picked up a nice L2 Corn Plus. I've used it on beans and corn and it's been good so far but I just haven't had the clean bin sample like I had with the old E. No dockage yet but I would like a cleaner bin. On beans I run the air at 6-7 the top chaffer at 5/8" and the bottom sieve just enough to allow beans to flow through it when I throw a handful of beans in. It's got the chaffer with the front 6 or 8 inches that are adjustable separately from the rest of the chaffer. Cylinder speed I usually kept around 550 give or take depending and clearance anywhere from 1/4 to almost 1/2 inch depending on how dry the beans are. Should I be opening the chaffer up more or close it to float the empty pods out better? I'm maybe a couple months away yet from harvest but will be getting it ready in a week or 2. What do you guys running L's and M's set things at? Thanks.

The number one thing is you have to use a STANDARD 1 1/8" round tooth chaffer.....not 1 5/8" long tooth corn chaffer. Look in your owners manual and it shows pictures of both. Set the standard chaffer at 1/2" and usually run the air between 4 to 5. Set the lower sieve just open enough to let the beans fall thru, which is pretty tight. It will still probably never match an "E" for cleanliness because you can't keep it totally full all the time.

Looks like I need to hunt down a good round tooth chaffer. I know mine has the 1-5/8 long tooth chaffer. I might call the old owner and see if he has the bean chaffer in his shed. Thanks Dr.

 Just adding to what Dr. said. Close bottom sieve until return runs half full then slowly open up until you are satified. The more you run through your return the more you crack grain. Open cyl. until you leave kernals on cob or beans in pod then close back a little. Test weight has alot to do with air. Always check 30 to 50 yards behind machine where it is running full. Takes time and work but it will do it.

Would a long finger round tooth chaffer work? That's what the former owner might have in his shed. He's measuring right now.

Long finger round tip would be worse than long finger square tip. If you must use a long finger, you need to have it closed a bunch for a decent soybean sample....like 3/8" of an inch. It's interesting on samples of grain....I've had guys actually insist on a dirtier sample up to the point of dockage and then other guys want it perfectly clean. It's all in the eye of the beholder I guess. The original owner should have the short finger (standard equipment) because that's what comes with the combine....long fingers are optional.

We are lucky enough to have a "bean screen"under the top sieve in the L3. Guy at the elevator says nobody has a cleaner load of beans than the ones we bring in. I wish I had one more of those screens.

The former owner called back and he only has the long round finger in his shed. He used it for oats. So I'll be on the hunt for the correct chaffer and or bean screen. I guess I'm fussy. Thanks guys and if there is anyone with an 1-1/8 round tooth chaffer for a long shoe L2 that they'd be willing to part with and close to SE MN, please send me a PM.

I like to run alot air. You will ride more crop out the back by closeing the top sieve than you can blow out. Open the top sieve to 3/4 and air almost wide open. Also your owners manual shows a picture of how to check the splitter behind the fan. Check all the adjustments on that page. If you don't lift the chaff at the front you can't blow it out.
 Like I said you can ride alot of grain out the back but it is hard to blow it out the back if every thing is right.   MACK

We run the long square tooth chaffer in our F2 and it does an excellent job.  As Mack said it may take more air than the book recommends.

also...check inside up front...there is a short tarp hanging down, make sure it's in good condtion, i had  dirty samples on 2 of my AC machines, and an old dealer friend told me about them. mine were worn and torn on one side. i replaced them and WALLA! must be some kind of air deflector or something! that did the trick!

Thanks. If I don't find the correct chaffer I'll give all your suggestions a try and see what works. Hopefully I'll find the right chaffer though.
