What path (placement) does the battery cable take to starter.  Does it run inside the toolbox?

yes it runs through the tool box. it needs to go under that metal angled flap to keep items in the tool box from rubbing on it. you will need to take the gastank off to do it right. there is an odd bend when it comes out from under the metal protective piece goes around the end of the steering box and out the side hole that lines up with the starter lug. once you get the tank off it will be aparent where it goes.

That side hole can and will saw  thru the insulation on the cable over time if it rubs on the edge.

Mine has had a piece of cheep 1/2" garden hose slit and slipped over it for 25 years. the original had braide sheathing on it. I replaced it with a hose piece around 1986 when I replaced the cable. If you don't take the tank of you'll never get it routed corectly and it will rub. I found that out the had way as the first time I did it it only lasted two years. It should not be rubbing on the hole.

There is a box like bracket welded to the steering tube. The starter wire goes thru that box and then drops down and comes out of the hole at the bottom by the starter.
In 20 years I have never had one wear through. This is the way they run on all B, C, CA, models. Bob

Thanks guys. Does insulation rub thru=meltdown?

I know about the  box-like bracket under steering tube and the 45
degree flap on the right side of the tool box shroud. The parts book fuzzily seems to
show the heavy battery cable taking the steering tube path, and the wire loom
running in the tunnel between that tool shroud flap and torque tube.

For starters (haha) my battery is too tall. So I need a shorter battery (there goes another $100). Anyone know the 12v battery group size to fit the repro battery boxes sold by Steiner? 

Then it seems the modern battery terminal is too close to the edge of the battery, if the clamp comes loose, it looks like it may (paranoia here) be able to rotate and contact the battery box walls. So any tips on battery cable selections and connectors? The parts book shows a terminal clamp with wire running in from the side (tangent to post). All the battery post clamps I see in the stores are with the wire running straight in radially. The parts book shows the starter cable armored up at each end where it may contact the sheet metal. I assume that is some sort of tough rubber, like a garden hose. There is a big difference between the original designed-right-for-application cable and a generic Walmart cable. LIke you guys said do it wrong, rub-thru in 2 years, do it right, 20+ years.

Also the connection to the starter switch. It looks  to be insulated with a piece
of cardboard. Is that OK?  The parts book for the CA has a rubber boot over the
end of battery cable at the top mounted switch. On the B and C looks like no rubber boot on the bottom mounted switch, the hot stud is exposed.

I wish I could be at the GOTO this weekend. 
I would be the guy looking over your wiring.
And looking for my next project.

I make my own cables and use electrical tape to cover te exposed metal ends, heat shrink tubing works well also. My battery cable connector supplier has different styles of connectors but I use the straight one as per original. On the battery end, I put a slight bend in the wire before I tighten the clamp. You don't have to worry about a clamp coming loose. Sometimes it a bigger problem getting the off when you want to disconnect them. LOL Bob
