I got my new 45 home today. 3 hrs. one way and made it with no problems. The 6.0 GM used some serious gas on the way home. I don't know where to start with this project. The motor was completely rebuilt a few years ago. The owner thinks it blew a head gasket. He drained the oil and anti freeze. I pulled the oil drain plug when we got home and got half a quart. It showed slight signs of water but not milky white. no water was standing on the bottom of the pan. I've considered starting it without water in it just to see what it runs like. I probably should pull the head and have a good look first. It has one brand new Titan 14.9 28 and 2 new front tires. The sheet metal is perfect all but the fenders. New radiator, clutches, rebuilt distributor and everything in the engine. He showed me receipts for all of this and lots more.

I've considered starting it with oil and antifreeze
to diagnosing what you have  IMHO

It does have a welded block behind the carb like wc's  had. Are 45's bad about this also?

Any block is bad about that if water is left in it and it freezes.

I did a compression check and got 150+ in all four. I don't know where to go next.

Why did the PO think it blew a head gasket? What symptoms does (did) it have?

Charley I really don't know. He said it had water in the cylinders. When I pulled the plugs he'd obviously filled the cylinders with oil. After we got it loaded his wife let it slip that it had set out and got rain in the motor but what was left of the oil wasn't milky white and it didn't have water on the bottom. I used the clutch in first gear to slow it down when I unloaded and the motor would turn when I let the clutch out. The starter was removed when I got it but i put it on tonight and did a compression check.

There my not be a thing wrong with it then  if it got rain in the exhaust and was lubed up.

I wouldn't run it without some coolant in the system. Won't the water pump be damaged if there is no water or coolant?

Loosen or take off the fan belt first. Could just be rain in the cylinders, hopefully the valves, etc. are ok.

I'm with Charlie on this one, change oil fill cooling system and run it for a while to see what hapens. If oil looks good after that then leave it sit for a weak or so then loosen drain plug on oil pan to see what comes out.

When I got home today I filled it with water and a little antifreeze. I let it set a couple hrs and it was still full so I bought some cheap 30wt oil and filled it with oil. I cleaned the sediment bowl and drained the tank. I put in fresh gas and let some run out the drain in the bottom of the carb. I then tried to start it. It hit and popped a couple of times but wouldn't start. I pulled the plugs (champions) and cleaned them and washed with carb cleaner. It started right up and ran really good. The oil pressure went right up. Hydraulic fluid squirted everywhere. The hydraulic hose that goes to the left lift cylinder is missing. I made a temporary hose out of a cut up air hose. It made for a happy day. I drove it up the road a couple miles and back. The temp never got hot and the oil pressure stayed up. It runs really good. Now I need to get a hyd hose and drain all the fluids and change them. I was afraid to try the hydraulic lift because of the temp hose. The oil has no signs of water.
