My dad has been looking for a set of front steel for the UC for 20 years. We've come across them in the past but they were always to pricy. We finally found a set just laying in a pile of junk not 15 minutes from the house and got them purchased.

Now that is a good find. But you know something that you can not run across every day is not going to be cheap if a guy know's what he has .

Luck has not one thing to do with it,putting your nose to the grind stone and look hard ,just make sure you realy want them because the price can be reason you do not have a set .
Alot of hard to find thing's are not that hard to find sometimes  it's knowing you are willing to pay market price for the RARE HARD to find item when you  find them.

If you really set your mind to having something, you usually can find it. Might take some time and some $$$, sometimes a long time, sometimes a lotta $$$,

I was starting to think I would never find an IB pintle hitch, but after a long time and a bunch of cash, I found some.

At one point, i remember back in the early 90's, I was probably 8-9 yrs old going and looking at a running Continental UC with my dad on full steel. Had tiptoes on the rear. The old man wanted 2500 and was probably a decent deal at the time but my dad didnt have the cash back then.
By the way we couldnt purchase the steel out right. We had to do some horse trading with another gentleman that knew the owner of the steel wheels that was able to purchase them for a song and then we traded him a complete disassemble CA allis for the wheels. Kinda like having a third party brokerLOL
The CA was purchased for a song also as it had gone through the F5 tornado last year on may 24 here in central oklahoma and we pretty much got it give to us.

I'd say finding some 15 minutes from home in a junk pile has a lot to do with luck.  Don't disagree with the hard work looking part.  I've found plenty of stuff that way.  Like you said, gotta be willing to pay up when the chance presents itself.
