Had a neighbour ask a question..

seems he's heard that you shouldn't put diesel into a galvanized fuel tank.

Anyone else heard of this or know why ???

Galvanizeing is a zink coating and it can flake off and clog filters, ruin injection pumps, injectors, ect.

You also are not sapposed to use galvinized pipe for the same reason.

We had a generator set installed at our fire department and the plumber ran galvinized pipe for the fuel lines. after it was in for awhile i decided to read the operators manual in order to properly service it and it states in the book not to use galvinized pipe for this reason.

So far the unit has been oparateing for anout 6 years no problem so far.

Here's what Page 120 of the Cummins install manual

says:

"Diesel Fuel Piping
Diesel fuel lines should be constructed from black iron pipe. Cast iron and aluminum pipe and fittings must not be used because they are porous and can leak fuel. Galvanized fuel lines, fittings, and tanks must not be used because the galvanized coating is attacked by the sulfuric acid that forms when the sulfur in the fuel combines with tank condensate, resulting in debris that can clog fuel pumps and filters. Copper lines should not be used because fuel polymerizes (thickens) in copper tubing during long periods of disuse and can clog fuel injectors. Also, copper lines are less rugged than black iron, and thus more susceptible to damage."
