Just replaced the sediment bowl gasket on my Marvel-Schebler carb on my Series III, now it chugs horribly. Runs fine for a bit after I let it sit, then it chugs under a load in gear and finally dies. Didn't do this before I replaced the gasket. I replaced the gasket because the sediment bowl was full of old cork, thought I'd clean it out and make it visible again!! Help!!

One more thing...how tight should I have the sediment bowl screw?? I have it tight enough so the fuel freely runs into the bowl. If I tighten it up too much, the fuel won't run into the bowl at all. Thanks!!

Is the screen still in the bowl? There is supposed to be a fine screen to filter out dirt and small amounts of water from the fuel going to the carb. If you don't have the screen, you have no filter.

yes, the screen is still in the bowl. totally intact too...

does the screen go above or below the gasket?? I didn't see how it went when I pulled the bowl off.

Took the carb off, blew it out, hoping to get any gunk out of it. Does the same thing. Tank maybe??

Start with the sediment bowl inlet !! ...remove the glass bowl and turn on the petcock 100%.....there should be two streams of fuel gushing out of the base. If not, the sediment bowl base inlet is plugged requiring removal from the tank to clean it out.

DrAllis, thanks for the assistance. I will do this tonight and let you know how it goes. I've been thinking it's something in the tank that's plugging the inlet to the bowl.

Two reasons for gas not going into sediment bowl.

Tank plugged.

Carb bowl full, float valve closed and sediment bowl seated well and sealed, air in bowl has nowhere to go. As soon as a little gas is used by engine so float valve opens, bowl will fill.

The best way to seat the sediment bowl is to give it a little twist as the bail is being tightened.

The bowl fills up fine...making me think its the carb. I get gas at the carb inlet.

Reading your first and last posts, my bet would be you have old gasket material that made it into the carb as the old one had left pieces in the bowl originally. A total breakdown/clean-up of the carb may be in order . . . . .

DrAllis, you were right. Inlet to sediment bowl from tank was plugged. Popped it free with a wire after pulling lines, carb, and everything else and cleaning, finding minimal gunk in the path the gas should take. I guess the system just needed to be gone through. Also, I remembered that the system pulls fuel from the tank, thus plugging the inlet to the sediment bowl, causing the chugging and eventual shutdown. You guys just saved me a ton of money, and taught me a lot!! Thanks to everyone for the assistance...hopefully I can repay someone else with some help now!!

TimNearFortWorth, your point was valid too. Old gasket material was holding the new gasket and filter away from the body of the sediment bowl, making a poor seal. Scraped the old away, put on the new. Thanks!!
