Lost in the grease from a past bearing disintigration I found this metal. on first inspection everything looked good, grease even looked and felt ok. However when I clean out the grease from the hub assembly I found this. would not have been happy to have a new bearing take in some of this.

I'm finding that even the oil is pretty gritty, when washing the housings out. After years of hard working a lot a metal has become a part of the system. This narrow front end design does seem to be the weekest link in the tractor. here is a picture of the shaft. This won't be a cheap fix.

If you have to break something down and decide to save money by not replacing something you automaticall end up spending twice what you thought you saved. That's my experience anyway.

+1 on the full monte. When I went to replace the lower seal on my D17 steering gear, I couldn't believe the amount of crud that was inside there and that it hadn't managed to destroy the P/S pump.
