not a stupid question at all!
look closely at the water pump pulley- you'll see that it has some bolts in it that change the pulley width. loosen the bolts, rotate the outer face, and the faces will draw together, pulling the belt tight.
old tech rules!

WARNING! They have a i/4in carriage bolt so be soaky and careful about loosening them. Can you say twist off! Then there is the "rusted together" outer tube that wont move on the inner to slide down the helix. Also plenty light weight material so force only bends things. You may find it easier and less time consuming to remove and get it to a bench to work on. Once freed up they move pretty easy by tapping in the raised hole with a punch. Just know that they don't have to be so tight on the belt turning only the pump and fan VS running a genny let alone an alternator. GOOD LUCK!!

As Dave said, But! be prepared for a little resitance to change from the adjustable pulley.Over the years they become "rust welded" and may need to be taken apart, on the bench/vise and with force before you can free them up. Once done and lubed they'll work fine for years .

Thanks guys, I'll give her a try tomorrow and report back. I should have my manual tomorrow or Fri, so that'll help a little. Thanks again.
