Always had a hard time reading the dip stick because the fluid is clear. Would if be safe to add a toutch of food coloring to my fluid to make it easier to read?

I have heard that they make special dye for oils.  When we switched oil suppliers, the new supplier's 821 compatible oil is very light colored and nearly impossible to see in the sight glasses of the 7000 series tractors.  The salesman (from Universal Lubricants) promised to get me some dye, but I aint seen any yet (and that was 3 years ago!)

The red dye put in diesel fuel to make off road fuel should work if you could get some.

Yes they do make dyes for oil. I have used some from caterpillar. The Cat part number is 9u 5032 that is blue. I know that they make other colors also that is just what I have on my service truck. It is very concentrated an little bit will dye alot of oil.

Many fuel dyes are incredibly carcinogenic and dangerous to handle.

One way you can get the dye result, is to dump in a bottle of common ATF- it already has dye, and won't adversely affect the hydraulic fluid.
