I just picked up a AC 185 and everything works great except that it pops out of gear.  For 3 rd gear it will happen without a load on level ground.  I can work around that but while baling the tractor jumped out of 1st going downhill but also on level ground.  I read somewhere that there are adjustments that may help (adjusting the travel on the shifter).

Does anyone have more detailed info on how to make this adjustment or other possible solutions.

Thanks

Not sure about the 185.  In the D-series tractors that would probably be a bent or worn shift fork not fully engaging the gears.  Pull the top off the tranny case and take a look.

Might as well figure 3rd is gone and 1st will be if you keep using it and it keeps popping out. It wears more every time it pops out. It will cost, but splitting and fixing right is the answer in my opinion.

Popping out on the level with no load indicates that it definiitely needs fixing.  Worn shift forks are only one part.  Tear the transmission down and look for worn bearings and mashed gears on the input and output shafts.  I've had it done on my 175 and 190.  A teardown is the only proper way to fix it.
