Sorry guys but this is rediculous !

Coil died on D-14 #3(actually the post broke !), it's a NAPA part IC277,so I call the local ( 10 minutes away) store, quote their number and she comes back that it's $79.95 ! YUP eighty bux !!
AND they'd have to order it...I said thanks but no thanks...

I go online to NAPA and that exact coil is $14.95 !! I 'chat' with someone as to why the price difference and was told that NAPA stores are individually owned and can charge what they want. I said that's fine, I'll just BUY from someone else.Heck I can order 3 online from NAPA ,UPS shipped and STILL save money compared to the local store!

Anyone else run into this nonsense ??

Sigh....thanks for the rant....

Jay

I replaced the front O2 sensor on my Subaru three years ago.  NAPAs price was $200+.  I am not kidding.  My Subaru dealer wanted $125 for an OEM sensor.  Sometimes it pays to shop around.

I hear you. I work for Autozone, and I unfortunetely experience that same problem, although not quite that bad. Napa has corporate stores AND franchise stores. The corporate stores are very similarly priced, however, the franchise stores are locally owned and can charge whatever they feel. Our place, is  usually fairly linear in pricing, but good luck finding a real parts guy. Autozone seems in my opinion more interested in hiring college educated, "experts" LOL . I have been there for 8 years now and have seen a bunch come and go. I would suggest you take that napa number and call AZ or O'Reilly, Carquest or whoever and have them cross reference that number. It may pay off real well.

I used to go to NAPA because the guys would try to help you out. Now they want the part number or the car it came off of or they are useless. The local O'Reilly seems to have people interested in helping out.

I only buy local if I have to have it that day.  I buy from rockauto.com.

For example:  Wifes Toyota was making a loud noise when I drove it over the weekend.  Looked under the hood and it was the bearings in the altinator.  Priced it on-line with O'Reilly's and it was $288 plus $88 core charge.  Priced the exact part with same part number at rock auto and it was $140 plus $83 core.  Can you say half the price?  I still shop it around to make sure rock auto has the best price and 95% of the time they do.

I must be lucky here as our locally owned Napa store is excellent to deal with. Prices are always fair and reasonable and the service is great. The parts guys really know their  stuff and will go out of their way to find just about anything.  They are also a Liquid Air dealer which is great for my welding supplies.

The NAPA store, locally owned, where my farm is located has competitive pricing and a knowledgeable sales staff. Usually if they don't have something in stock they can have it in the next day. The Autozones around here don't have any real parts people. O'Reillys is even worse - dumb and rude employees.

I know what you mean Hugh. Although the O'Reilly store here has hired a dedicated to his job guy that will go the extra mile to help, they overall still get called "O'Really Stupid". Better prices? Maybe. Better parts? Nope!

A young man I know worked for AZ for three years, he started right out of high school. He showed up on time every time, knew basic mechanics and was able to answer customer questions and find what they needed. He went the extra mile for customers and they would come in and ask for him. AZ promoted people that had been there half as long as long as he was, gave him only minimal raises and had him work from open to close and most week ends. The other employees would get p*ssed at him for doing the job right.

He finally went down the street to NAPA where he is appreciated, and better paid

The NAPAs around here are competative because they have to be. I've been places were NAPA is the only game in town and it's a different story.

Its a shame, but most Auto Parts Stores are not like they were when I was young and new in the Automotive business. Back then if you came in with a rubber grommet or something unusual and asked the old timers behind the counter "got somethin' like that" they would usually go in the back room and come out with somethin' close that you could use and send you on yer' way "no charge". Anymore its "what's the application I need to punch it in the computer."
I had an axle bearing starting to make noise in the rear of my 29' pickup streetrod. I have an 8" Maverick rear in it. Brought the axle and bearing in the local AZ and said to the young feller behind the counter " need an axle bearing for a 77' Maverick. The young lad looked at me with the deer in the headlights look and said: "I'm sorry sir, but whats a Maverick, and who made it?"  "Its before my time" I laughed and said: "man, am I really getting that old"? Cry  After we got past that, they did have a bearing in stock to my surprise! Sure as heck didn't look as heavy duty looking as the one on the axle tho.....

I will say Autozones scheduling across the board is rather unfair and useless, they seem to abuse the good help out of necessity really, and really should pay their better help a little more in my opinion. That being said, The good old days are gone at most parts stores. Its really a matter of the hiring pool not being very hands on any longer. Most kids expect a job handed to them right out of college, and they do not wish to have to learn much in the process. Even in the auto repair world, many of the vocational auto repair programs do a poor job of giving any real world training.  Kids just don't get out and help dad in the shop as much as they used to, and that translates into very few people using their head to help "rig up a fix" or find a part that works without punching it up on the computer. I think its not a problem that just one of the parts stores have, its really across the board for all of them, and its gonna get worse I am afraid.
