This one may only get a little feedback from some of you into the older tractors, but I thought it was worth a shot. I have a love for Old A-C tactors especially pre-WWII stuff. That being said, most of my tractors have magnetos. I am interested in what some of you have magneto wise, and what your favorite is. I have 2 UC's with RV4B fairbanks morse magnetos on them, an E with an Eisemann G4, a U with a fairbanks 4B, another U with a fairbanks BK4B, and then a U power unit with a bendix srn401, then another UC with a fairbanks fmor4b (not the correct mag, but it works great and bolts up right) then I have a bunch of WC's with fairbanks FMj family stuff on them Obviously, I don't expect anyone to go into detail on what they have if they don't want, but I am interested in what your favorite mag or brand of mag would be and why. My personal favorite is the RV4B, just mostly because of the looks of it. As far as function though, I think that 4b on my 37 U is the best. My neighbor has a couple B's with American Bosch magnetos. They look pretty neat too. Thoughts????? |

| I love having my FMJ on my C. Since it doesn't need a battery for it to start and run, I took the alternator off and replaced it with a hydraulic pump. I do have a battery though, so I'm experimenting with a solar charger. |

For the most part all these are good mag's .
For the other side of the most part.These mag's are only as good as the rebuild or what you ask your rebuilder to do to them .Or if you just drop point's in yourself and it sparks.A term I use is a bench mag ,it works on your bench.Not under compression in the cyc. ETC,ETC.
Now taking to the correct mag rebuilder ,he will check and test repair and replace what it takes to make this a good mag that last under long loads and heat . ETC,ETC,

| My favorite brand amd model is what belongs on the tractor so we have RV-4s, FM-Bs, FMJs. No more hours than they get on our stuff all of them are reliable once made "right" as Fred said right to me meens right, not just sparking. For a user that gets more than a few hours I would use an FMJ or FMX. |

I use the correct application when possible too Butch- I do have a couple that are not historically correct, but they probably will stay on. Fred is right on about a proper mag build-it is essential. I am a stickler for a perfect magneto. I rebuild every one I use, including re magnetising. I have a stock pile of several hundred magnetos, some are good I am sure, but some have not been proven, some are for parts.
I have a homeade magneto tester, but it works as well as any bought one you will find. I usually test my mags for about a twelve hour period, then retest a little later.

My favorite mags are the ones that work.
Considering that you are not going to find one less then 60 years old and they are still rebuildable or work they are amazing engineering. ------------- The universal answer to all questions is yes, how much do you want to spend? |

A little different. I have a neighbor that has a 1952, John Deere B that belonged to her folks. I would not start, and hadn't for a few years. Even a JD guy wasn't able to get it started. I thought I would give a try. First I checked for a spark, it did not have one. It had a Wyco mag on it. I knew the local Allis Chalmers dealer had a mag tester years ago, so I checked with them if they could check a mag from a 2 cylinder tractor, they could, bring it in. They fixed it, BUT it was not a mag but a 6 volt battery system, with everything, even the coil stuffed inside a mag case. I've never seen that before.
