Okay guys, here's a question I've got....

I'm trying to fix a wd45 hydraulic cylinder thats leaking where the rear endcap screws into the center section. It's leaking right through the threads, not on the end by the gland nut. I tried to take it apart to clean and dope the threads, but I'm afraid a pipe wrench will deform the cylinder, and it seems to be on pretty tight? Any tips??

I should also add that I know most of those cylinders leak or seep a small amount, but this one is a steady drip when there's pressure in it.

I just posted on the same exact issue with the fix. Wish I had taken pics. My guess is most cylinders leak right were you described. I found a o-rig that fits perfect and still allows the metal to metal contact. That pipe is pretty thick walled. Just put in a suitable vise and it will unscrew.

It's ironic but my WD45 sprung a leak in the same place this weekend and I had the same concerns about the pipe wrench deforming the cyl..........now I know what to do.

Like wkpoor says the cylinder is fairly heavy duty and also, there is no piston inside that has to conform to the inside diameter. You could have small flat spots in the center of the cylinder and it won't effect the operation of it. If distortion is a concern, stay in the middle of the tube so the ends where it threads together aren't effected.

Tapping on the cylinder at the threads will help break the threads loose. I would suggest a chain type pipe vise or a strap pipe wrench.

After you get it apart put red loctite on threads. MACK

Okay, I'll try the vise, a chain wrench and red locktie in a few days. If those don't work I've got beer in the shop fridge and a cellphone to find a used cylinder, LOL. Thanks guys!
