Intake and exhaust on separate sides of the head so it can't be a BUDA 230/262. I'm gonna guess a 2900 301cid. |

Back in high school my buddy's dad had a 70 C20 that color. Don't know how rare that body style was, Northern IL Gas had quite a few back in the day. Suburbans weren't particularly popular or numerous back then but they were the only alternative to a custom built 4 door pickup.

Armand, just think, you could store some of your toys in it so you can display them at a car show or whatever and not have to handle them.

I know that body style is not common. How rare it is, I'm not sure, but that is a cool old Surburban for sure! Being in AZ. it still has sheetmetal hanging on it. That's a plus for something like that around here! Most Suburbans of that era never made it past 10 years with the salt on the roads in the Winter time. The only problem with it I see is the lack of a belt driven fan. If you ever plan on towing with it, you won't get very far, as most if not all electric fans do not pull the same amount of air as the oem fan would have, I would also speculate that the original gas radiator is in the truck, further exacerbating the problem. | I have been following a bunch of threads on converting the 70-73 suburbans to diesel, this is the first allis chalmers diesel I've seen. the prefered conversion seems to be a cummings diesel conversion, oviously not an easy conversion, the most common it to convert it to a 6.2 or 6.5 diesel. 17 mpg is sort of dissapointing, I would have thought it would do better, but maybe it is tuned for power. I'd like to build one in the future that we could haul equipment with and also put our farm logo on it to get attention, (at least that's what I told my wife). They are still pretty affordable with tons of affordable parts due to a long run and even more so with a blown engine, I think these are one of the great buys for building a nice clean simple useful truck. |
