What are some ways to check it over to narrow down the issue? And/or can they be rebuilt?

Many people rebuild them. Lots more think they can. Some need the magnets recharged, some need a coil, maybe just points or a condenser. You can mess things up if you try to do it yourself without knowing what you are doing.

Let's see if this works.

It's a big file and takes a bit to download, at least with my connection.

Buy a copy of Neil Yerigan's Magneto book. Reprinted recently. You have to have some basic knowledge and tools, but it is possible. Faster and probably cheaper if it is just one, to hire it out to a reputable shop.

Go to the top of this page and click on [Parts Etc.]. Then look for Steve at B&B Custom Circuits ad. Send it to him. It will come back hotter and better looking than when new. I know from the one that I sent him on my CA.    Jim

tucker is right, take it to a shop that overhauls them.a basic volt/ohm meter will tell you nothing benificial as far as the serious problems, such as a bad secondary winding (intermittant) or a bad capicitor.nor will it indicate the condition of the magnets...as far as timing to the engine.get no.1 cyl on comp.stroke, with the fire position on the fly wheel in the middle of the timing port.take the cap off of the front of the mag.turn the mag.in opposite rotation and line the rotor up with the protrusion and you are in time.mag.should line up on coupler.if not you will have to remove thr plate on front of governor and position the gear to get it to line up...
