one thing I found out the hard way with buy a d-17, is check the steering out, the one I bought had no grease in the steering box and pieces of bearings

Not original, but still a good buy for 1500.

Oh wow that's one of the last series 4.5 production models just before the one-seventy came out.  See it already has the square fenders on it.Big smile  Great find!

I'd say if everything works on it then $1500 is a steal of a deal.Thumbs Up

How are the hydraulics on the d17? I really want something with a decent 3 point control compared to my wd45. How would I tell that this tractor is a series 4 when I go look at it?
Thanks

That is not a series IV as it does not have the hyd pump where the belt pulley is. The D17 has a single acting hyd pump as does the WD45. What do you mean by "decent 3 point control"? Both models have a single acting pison actuating the rock shaft and rear lift arms; power up; gravity down.

i am not familiar with the hydraulic schematic on the D17, thats why i was asking. I am not satisfied with the 3 point control on my wd45 at this point. i guess that i have just been spoiled with using all of my dads newer tractors. I am used to a nice float control, push the lever up a little and the implement will raise a little and stay there. if i move the lever on the wd45 a little, it will slowly raise up all of the way. what improvements were there on the d series compared to the 45?

Improvements over WD 45 was safer riding position, can climb on from either side or over back. Hi-Lo Nuetral power director over only hand clutch for WD45.Believe Hyds. are slightly better on early series D-17 than WD45. Wd45 has good hyds. but can be tricky to adjust. More gears due to Power director.Better electrical 12 volts versus 6 volts on WD45

Looks like a GOOD BUY!!
Serial number would help.  I believe it is on the starter housing left side looking forward.
There is a table here on this site.
Let us know.  However, $1500 for a running D-17 is a GREAT PRICE!  Like those fenders.
Are they transferred or original.
Good Luck!

ps:  Let us know what you do

D17 SIV will give you automatic height control on the 3pt...anything older and you will have to adjust the height whenever you lower the 3pt.  That is why I love the D17 SIV, 170 and 175's  for brush hog work.....they have a seperate lever to set the lift arm height. Early D17's like this will be no better than the WD45.
