My WD starts great before it runs a while, But if it kills it barely turns over, and I have to wait a long before she'll restart. I've got good cables, nice clean, tight connections. What's the problem/solution?

I just got my WD45 back together and it wouldn't crank. Everything tested with the DMM like it should. Like Norm said "check easy first". I had a new neg battery cable in the barn so on a hunch I swapped the old one out. Sure enough that was the problem.

If it is 6V, change it to 12V and you will wish it had been changed years ago. MACK

If your timing is a little too far advanced, it can make cranking hard when warmed up. If you have a magneto and engine is tuned up right, it should start if it rolls over. If you have coil and distributor, the hard cranking will suck up enough juice that your spark will be weak. I would start by retarding the timing a bit if points and condenser are in good shape. The CA Dad bought new would never start with the starter from day one. The dealer replaced everything but the battery cables. When I cleaned the tractor up in 1998, I had the starter cable off and found only half of the wires were connected to the battery clamp. I had already decided to upgrade to 12 volts when I found the bad cable. Anyway, Dad thought it was GREAT he could start the tractor from the seat instead of cranking it.

That's a question that could be a bunch of different problems. The way I'm reading your post, it sounds like its a cranking problem. The first thing I would do is test the Battery. Do a load test, or if you do not have a load tester, take it to the local garage and have it load tested. It could be as simple as a bad Battery. If the Battery load tests out the way it should after a good charge put in it, renew both Battery cables. Cables are a part that where they may look good looking at em', they may not be internally and cause a lot of grief. While you are renewing the cables, make sure the connections are clean. If the problem still exists, I'd have the starter tested. That's the last part of the cranking system. While the Starter is out, make sure the grounding bands on the nose cone are clean of rust and debris. Also make sure the Starter cavity is clean where the Starter bands ground... HTH

Make a chisel mark or scratch on both the mag flange and the governer housing so they are in line with each other(this is for reference). With the engine running turn the top of the mag away from the block a little bit(maybe the width of your scratch) at a time and listen to the engine. If RPM seems to increase without a miss, you may have found a big part of your problem.

Don't forget that for a 6V system, you MUST have a minimum of 02 ga cable with 00 being better. If you have 04 ga or 06 ga cables, it will always act like the battery is run down on 6V. With 6V, you have half the volts (compared to 12V) so it takes twice the amps to do the same work. With 12V you have twice the volts of a 6V system so it takes half the amps to do the same work. It takes more cable to conduct more amps.

I interpreted the original post as saying it turns over fine when cold. When warmed up, it won't crank over. I don't see the engine warming up would have an effect on the cables or starter???

My Wd doesn't have a mag. Could I retard the timing by rotating the distributor?

Also I had the starter tested, and while I had it off the tractor I put in new bushings. I have cleaned the starter to block connection, cleaned the ground strap to block, cleaned and tightened all connections. I'm really at a loss trying to get this thing right. Also the battery is brand new, but the old battery did the same thing.

Yes, make a mark so you can get back to where you are now just in case. Scratch the base of the distrb and the mounting flange. I think you would turn the distrib clockwise to retard it. i set timing by ear on all my tractors. Turn it till it speeds up and just begins to "sputter" and back it off a little bit. You may have to change you low idle screw some if the engine speed changes much with a timing adjustment.
