block deck on my WD45 block is just out of spec, so I was looking for machine shop to square the deck and adjust the sleeve bores accordingly. I found a fellow that will do it (something that seems to be getting harder and harder to do), but he wants to machine the sleeve flange rather than counter bore the block. Anybody see anything wrong with that? Looks to me like he will be taking about .003 to .004 off of the block, so he would be taking at least that off of two of the sleeves.

No, I have had it done before......but kind of a lazy way out as the counterbore may not be flat. Example: he machines the block flat and you insert an new sleeve, mesaure the counter bore in one spot and say you have .004. go 180 degrees away and you have .006 or .007. These are exceptable measures, however if you are going through the trouble, why not do it right.

The correct way is to machine the deck flat, cut the couterbores, then set your liner project, with shims if needed

Bout guarentee your c'bores aren't on the same plane as deck before flatting.Likley more off after trueing deck. That's the way my 45 was. Since ignorance is bliss, you could probably bolt her back together without doing anything and never know the difference.
