OK - just picked up a 51 CA Thompson High Crop. s/n CA7272. Not running yet, but supposedly had problem popping out of second gear - reason it was parked. What am I looking at as most likely cause / repair? best, Ed

It is unusual for a CA to pop out of Second Gear. Usually it is third.
The usual cause of this is the lugs are rounded on your shifter gear in the transmission.
Sometimes you can fix it with gear shift forks but usually it is the costly gear and shifter replacement in the transmission.
Usually comes from shifting on the go. Grinds the ears on the gears.
Remember, the CA has a constant mesh helical gear transmission. That means that you do not shift gears only shifter collars that mesh with lugs on the various gears.

While you have it apart, make sure the thrust washers contain the end play in the gear stack and make sure your shifter is up to par. Any added slop or end play can assist in hurrying the popping out process again, but it is usually caused by grinding gears.

We used to have various size snap rings that took up the end play in the gear train. They were measured in thousands of an inch. When it first occurred we used them with some success cause it was a lot less costly than dissembling the transmission.
However, you are looking at a tractor that is pushing 60 years old. I hate to mention the expensive job but if you are going in replace the gears.
Perhaps you can find a used CA transmission or gears. Check e-bay. They have the damnedest things at a relatively good price.
