Planting with a PS 8070. It comes and goes, but sometimes in 5TH and 6TH gears in low range the tractor starts chunging. You can feel it, hear it, and see it in the exhaust smoke. I can shift down to 4Th and back to 5TH and all will be fine. It seems to happen as more as it goes down a hill. If I throttle down just 100RPM as it goes down hill, it won't happen. Any ideas?

I delt with this in a 8070 earlier this year. What I found was it is not the transmission but it is in the injection pump . If you tighten up the govener control linkage this should go away. The one I was dealing with was very severe. If you take the top cover off the injection pump while your tractor is running like that you should find that the govener rod is shaking back and forth , if you put your finger on it and it clears up this is your problem. Then you just need to tighten up the linkage arm and it should take care of it.

Oh ya and the diesel pump service places don't know how to adjust them for an allis tractor because I had the pump in the shop 3 times before the Dr. told me what was wrong with it on here.

AC 200 puller can you give more detail on how to adjust the governor linkage I am having the same problem with my 8030. I took a look at it today but was not sure what to adjust what I saw under the top plate looked like a place to turn the pump up, a 7/16 jam nut with a screwdriver slot in the end of the threaded shaft I don’t think I am looking at the governor adjustment. I did not see the spring that Ed was talking about. I took the top cover off the pump four 7/16 head bolts am I in the right place or should I take the side cover off, it has four screwdriver head bolts??? Please point me in the right direction I am not seeing the forest for the trees. If I do fine the right adjustment place what do I turn and how much do I turn it. Thanks so much in advance. rieg

Ok I will give it a shot I'm not the best at explaining without a picture but here it goes. Yes it is the top cover on the pump and under that will be the govener control linkage and the fulcrum. It is the rod that you can take and move back and forth but first put your throttle in the wide open or full throttle position, you can then take ahold of the control link or the top of the fulcrum and move it back and forth. You need to tighten the the jam nut next to the control rod till you feel resistance on the linkage, if you get it to tight it will not idle down then just loosen it a bit. The books show the adjustment with the control linkage out and say to tighten the linkage rod so that it will stick straight out and stay there and fall when shaken. Hope this helps.

When I tighten the nut with the coil spring underneath it( takes a 7/16" open wrench), I have the throttle set at idle speed. Move the governor linkage backwards with your finger and let go of it and let it spring forward to see how free it is. Keep tightening the friction nut/spring until there is definite drag on the linkage. The coil spring under the nut will disappear..... you are going to tighten it that far.

Thank guys for all the help I am new at the injection pump and can use all the help I can get. I found the nut yesterday and just gave it ½ turn sounds like I need to tighten it some more. I did move it back with my finger and it springs forward easily when I let go. It sounds like it should have a slight drag to it as it goes forward, that is if I understand you correctly. So I should tighten the 7/16 nut with the spring in front of it until I notice a slight drag on the forward motion. Does this in any way make the governor more effective? Our 7020 had great governor reaction as does our Deere equipment and even our 170 but our 50 and 30 have very little governor reaction that I notice. Is that just the nature of this pump? Thanks again you guys are great now if the weather would just cooperate. rieg
