I started working on my 616 compact tractor. Does anyone know how you get to the brake bands? I removed the seat and it looks like you have to take the top off of the transmission to get to them. Also, does anyone know where a parts manual could be found?

If you are refering to the small sub-compact 616 tractor then these tractors have no brake bands. They use an exspansion pressure aplifying wedge design like the later model D-series tractors and the 170/180's. You must remove the fenders, wheels, rear hitch and drop housings to exspose the brakes. the common problem is oil seeping by the oil seals from the inside of the rear end. After removing the output shaft and the drop housings you can see how to pull the linkage pins and outer cover. The disc's will likely be soaked with oil. To fix these you can bake the oil out of the disc's in an oven for several hrs. To fix it completely you'll have to remove the carrier bearing plates on both sides of the differential and replace the oil seals and O-rings and reassemble. I like to scuff the wear surfaces with heavy sand paper to aid the friction. It helps to remove all the bolts holding the rear end in the torque tube and slide the rear end rearward a little. You do not have to completely remove the rear end.
------------- Yea, I can fix that.....

Thanks Dave for the info, much appreciated. Sometime back I inquired if you have the screens that attach just ahead of the hydro and hydraulic levers, did you get a chance to see if you have them?
