Hi guys,
I took the hydraulic pump off of my B to check out the relief valve. The pump was not building enough pressure and also had some drift in the hold position. The relief valve was listed as a possibility for both in the book, so I figured I'd start there.
I took the bottom plug out, then removed the control shaft. I could hear the relief assembly come off of the back of the shaft. I looked in the control shaft bore and saw the bottom of the guide in the hole. It slid right out after wiggling it a little. But, I couldn't find the ball that goes between the plunger and the top insert. I had the relief valve bore vertical, so that all of the parts would fall straight down. What are the chances that the ball fell into the pump? (It wasn't in the control shaft bore, but could it fall into one of the side journals?) Or, is it possible that the ball was not in the assembly, which is why I couldn't achieve pressure? (There is a ring of shiny metal around the top of the plunger, and it doesn't have kind of marks that I would've gotten from pressing the top insert deeper, when I was trying to adjust the pressure on the tractor).
Any thoughts would be appreciated as this is my first time in one of these pumps. Hopefully, the engineers made the journals smaller than the ball to prevent a knucklehead like me from having it drop into one of the holes.
Thanks

If it was making pressure and some drift in hold there is a good chance the ball was in the pump, and may still be .You have to turn it in all direction to get one out. It is a 3/16 ball i think. Had similar proablm on B . Took relief valve barrel to machiniest , he took 10 thousanth inch out and it refaced seat . Put back togather and put seat down 600 thousands, works like a charm.
