Is there paint still available that would be a close match to what our ACs where originaly painted with? Most people including myself paint them with acrylic paint or better. I am nearing paint on my unsyled WC restoration, I thought it would be nice to try and make it look like it did in 38. Has anybody tried this? Also, I know this has been brought a lot in the past, but was PO1 used from begining up to the D series then changed to PO2 aka corprorate orange? Thanks, JM

Tractor supply sells ac orange valspar paint it worked well for me

Yes the change from PO1 to PO2 was done during the D series.  FYI, PO2 is not Corporate Orange, there were three total shades of Orange, PO1, PO2, and Corp.  Corporate Orange began it's life with the 7000 series Black bellies, if memory serves.

It is an interesting question but Unless someone has access to the original paint mixture and original colour mix you can't be sure.  With out a doubt which ever one you pick someone will disagree but most that know Allis understand and don't care about variations.The tractor I'm restoring (original paint) still in family.  has many variations of PO#1
the completely aged and exposed is kinda like aged PO#2 ( more red then orange)
Aged and dust and grease covered is very light and more orange no real hint of red tone
All of the paint if sanded becomes lighter yet.
Then the protected paint has two tones of what I would consider close but very
the dry protected paint between two tightly bolted pieces of metal.(no sun, no dirt. no oil)
and the metal that has been caked with grease and oil from near on the begining of use(oil pan, oil air filter base) 
The paint color has had a large variation on aging due to the conditions it was submiitted to. And no doubt a variation from the factory given the technology.
 
I'd be interested to know if the dry protected pain is most like it would have looked year one or the grease protected is. 
some here have a ppg number that most seem to agree is original. 
In the end pick the one you like or think is correct and enjoy

Something along the lines of Van Sickle Enamel that is available through many of the "Farm Store" chains is going to be pretty close to what was used on original tractors of this vintage. Most of these chains do not stock PO#1, but can order it in gallons and aerosol spray cans. I highly reccomend using the hardener in your final paint coat. The hardener probably gives a little more gloss than original, but does in fact harden the paint & help prevent fading & chaulking. Kip

Great points made above, the "original" color is never going to be an exact science. The ppg 60080 is a good match for persian one in a higher end line. The oil based Van sickle is available in all three a-c versions pesian one, two, and also corporate orange Vansickles code for persian one is 477-71 I am currently preserving a  59 d14 and decided to use the Vansickle I am thouroughly pleased. I used hardener in the mix and sprayed through a 1.4 mm tip.  I couldn't be more thrilled considering the price differential. 86.00 a gallon for the ppg vs Vansickle. I have a basis for durability too, my neighbor used their enamel years ago on a minnie-mo and it looks great to this day.
I have been given a TON of advice on painting and am starting to question how good some of it was. I guess in the long run, find something you like and stick with it.

No, green was used until sometime in 1929, then original Persian Orange was used until mid 1960, the D series started in 1957.  All 1957, 58, 59, and a good percent of 1960 D series tractors were PO#1.

Then  PO#2 was used until sometime in 1977 then the third orange, Corporate orange, took over until the Deutz green took over.

Go to a Allis Lineup and all of them will be some different shade of orange....

the D15 series 1 was the first tractor to be painted the persian orange 2, also then I believe the D17 series 2 and higher would have been #2 as well.

I just sprayed some AMAC Acrylic Paint (PO2) and am very pleased.

I agree with Matt.
The introduction of the D-15 was the first change in the shade of the Allis Orange.

When i restored my wd45 i used the 72 or newer because the origanal was to expensive to get mixed i went to an old allis dealer for my paint and they gave me the paint code for the origanal orange but likei said it was to expensive for me
