I took a D15 for a test drive today. When driven down the road in forth gear it realy howls. The owner told me before I drove it that it had a noisy forth gear. It makes noise in all gears its just realy loud in forth. The noise I think is coming from the final drives. My question is how much noise is acceptable? I would expect some noise as the final drives are straight cut gears but it seams excessive. It was advertised as a series II but had a round muffler and oil bath breather. I did not realise that a D15 was bigger than a D14. I measured across the front rails to see if my 140 loader would fit and it is two inches wider 19 1/2" vs. 17 1/2". It had good tires paint was o/k brakes not so good started and ran smooth. He said he would go as low as $4000. I think I will probably pass.

It could be the ring and pinion gears. I have seen that happen before. It makes the gears sound loud.

I had a 170 that I hated running down the road the noise hurt my ears. Always thought it was the finals until I parted it this spring. One area of the ring gear was severely pitted and worn (it sat for 18 years in an orchard)....I assume the water level got that high in the rearend.

My '57 D-14 was noisy ! Putting new bearings in made a HUGE difference....there weren't any balls left on one of the races !!!

Never drove a D15 that didn't howl going down the road....pretty normal.

we have 8 d-15s and they all howl going fast down the road. Several are frm original owners and they said they did that when new

DR. Allis: I have the highest respect for you and I really don't want to disagree with you. However, would you ever consider rephrasing the word "howling" to perhaps "singing"?! I have the series I and II of the D-15. My favorite A-C tractors and they always "sing" to me in fourth gear. Would you ever re-consider your diagnosis? Much appreciated and take care. Howl or sing or whatever you call it, It's normal for D-15's to make final drive noise in high gear.

$4000 Seems high for a Series I. For a few hundred more, I got a 1966 Series II with factory 3 point, AC 400 loader, new clutch and battery. Yea, it has a bit of a whine on the road too. Seems like everything is in good shape though.

I paid$1500. for mine 2 years ago. I put my loader on it from the D14, The upper mounts were off, so I used one original mount and the other side was outside if the frame mount, so I welded an extra tab on and used a long bolt to go through both holes. Works great. Bob

I wish I had more experiance with the D series so I could distinguish a howl from a song!
It would help when trying to put a value on a tractor. My D14 whines on the right side. It looks like it has had the nut come off the back of the bull gear. The final drive pan and the side of the loader support have the scars to prove. The bull gear chewed right through the final drive oil pan. They had to weld the cut shut. Any way this chipped the teeth and this is what I thought was causing the noise from that side.
