Just thought I would post these, they cut down 2 big cottonwood trees at the farm, next to the power lines that had been hit by lightning. Grandpa hooked up to the biggest skid tonight, and pulled it off the field to a better spot. His 175 diesel did good, hooked him up about 6 times to get about 80 yards, but made it!

I see Grampas leaning over the hind whells to give her a little more traction . My Son takes the D 21 in the woods, comes out with four or five tree tops. More wood than an get in full box pickup with side up to top of cab ranked in. | Does anyone buy cottonwood trees? I have a couple of trees down at the pond that would make those look like saplings. I don't think two guys could reach around the base and be able to touch hands. I sure would like to get rid of them before they come down on some implements. |

Actually I think its going to the saw mill. If its kept dry, its good perlin material for building. my uncle figured the log in the picture, weighed around 1 ton being that it was still green and wet. Grandpa went about 20 ft. each time, before it would bog down in the field. Seems like it would almost get going, then sit down and spin the tires! Once he got onto some drier land, she hooked up and took off. B26240 (Mark) Where are you at in MN? We have them all over here near La Crosse, WI. They are good for telling fishermen that they should get out and go popper fishing for Blue Gills. ALWAYS get out the fly rod when the trees let go of their seed. Works every year for all of my life. Don't know yet about this year though. Got plenty warm early. Might be a week early this year.

Cottonwood is actually pretty good lumber if kept out of the weather. Most of the old flare box wagons around here were made of it(probably not the flooring). It made excellent flooring for hay lofts and even makes good siding for your barn if kept painted. A friend of mine built a playhouse for his kids about 20 years ago. It is 100% cottonwood from his sawmill. He now uses it for storing feed for his animals and it looks as good as it did the day he finished painting it. Not much good for firewood unless you don't have anything else and you can stoker the fire.
