well i dont have any experience with the 440, but i never did like those v8 cummins motors. The 8550 is basically the same as 7580 with heavier components and more power. 7580 is basically 7080 power hauling around more weight. but it does have a height and traction advantage. we like to use 7580 for planting
so IMO...

Eldon, Get the 8550 that is close to you for real cheap. I would then go for the 7580 then the 440.

Darryl all three are kinda close to me....but I'm not lookin! I had a guy stop by that wondered if I would farm his 300 acres...which I can't. He said he was looking at a 440 at a dealership, I told him I thought there were better options....just got me to wondering what the rest of you thought.

I would say 8550,7580 then 440. But the 7580 might be cheaper to maintain than 8550.440 are neat but unreliable cummins in them although the drivetrain seems ok. There was a 440 north of me the people put alot of clutches in it but most likely it was operator error causeing it.

I to never like thed "throw away" triple nickel. Cummins makes a fine product, but these motors along with the VT903 left alot to be desired.
One thing about it, take the motor out of the equation, the rest of the tractor was built by a company whose entire business was 4x4 tractors so I am pretty sure the est of it is good

I used to drive a '72 Steiger Bearcat which is the sister of the 440 AC. I think the only difference is the Cummins engine vs the Cat 3208. The Steiger was a tough tractor so I think the 440 would be also except for the 555 power plant.

The only one of the 3 that I have had any experience with is the 7580. I really have enjoyed running mine, however the transmission is out of it now. I've owned it for about 10 years, and have gotten a lot of work out of it; pulled it pretty hard most of the time, so problems were probably inevitable. Hope someday to get it going again, and just use it for a spraying tractor. darrel
