What id the best way to remove the grill screen from the sheet metal. It is spot welded and I need to replace it and get rid of the remains of the spot weld.

Carefully grind off the mesh from the back side. If you got steady hands, use an angle or die grinder. If not, use a Dremel with a good grinding stone. The Dremel will take longer, but is not as likely to produce an "oops!".
