Has anyone had any experience with upgrading the recommended oil for the transmission and final drives on the HD1O. The book says 30 weight Motor oil for both in winter, 50 weight in in summer. The reason given in the book was that other oils might destroy the neoprene seals.
It seems that there should be a better high pressure alternative. Any suggestions?

finals I would use a GL5 rated gear oil , 80/90 seems about right.

On trany I would also look at something with extreme pressure rating as it also is the ring and pinion lube . Would say GL5 - 80 or another EP oil

I would be carefil about using any EP oil in the transmission. Probably OK for finals but anything with brass bushings etc will not tolerate EP oils. The brass will turn to a black crumbly stuff and get funny trails in it like worm holes or groves. 50 wt motor oil is the perfered choice. Don't ask how I know. Just don't do it. Sulphur which is a component of EP oils will react with the brass and all it does is cost money.

It appears you are quite correct in saying not to use 85/90 gear oil. After your comment I got hold of the research and development dept of Shell oil and they confirmed that 30 or 50 weight motor oil is right and then said that if I wanted a better shear capacity and slightly more lubricity to use a trans hydraulic oil 30 or 50 weight depending on season. To say the least I was surprised.

We have used 80/90 in finals 50W in trans. for more than 40 years
