Newby here members, I'm looking for he torque sequence for this engine.  A few years (10 or 12), we tore it down, redone the top end and now wondering if the head required a re-torque after so many hours.  Runs fine but have to pull it halfway to Chicago to get it to fire. Injectors were rebuilt at that time also.  Thanks much. Bill

I don't think that the torque of the head has anything to do with it not wanting to fire up easy expecially being the head job was done so many years ago. Have you tried using starting fluid? I know with my D-17 262 diesel since it was brand new we always have to use starting fluid to get it to start easy otherwise it will just sit there and crank forever before it will fire up and run.

Yes, it has an addiction to either.  Dosen't help much though.

Not to familiar with how these are timed, by that I mean I don't know if the pump pulley is pressed on or bolted, but slipped timing can cause hard starting.  also air in the fuel supply line.

I would still like to know if anyone could share a torque sequence for this engine.  I believe it is usually center bolts and work the way out to ends?  Should I check compression on this and what should it be?

No torque sequence. Start in center and work to outside edges and go in stages.

Thanks.  Do you know what the compresion should be ?

I'd like to say it should be up close to 400 but I don't know for sure. I have the adapter to check compression on a 262, just have never done it. In the 40's, my D17D starts hard. It will start without any assistance. Below 40 it takes a whiff (I mean a slight whiff) of ether or a block heater.

Where would you plug the adaptor in?

It goes in place of the injector. Should be the same as used on the 262.

Sounds like the transfer pump is weak. Transfer pump in the input of the injector pump. If the transfer pump cannot build enough pressure at cranking speed to force fuel into the rotor head of section of the high pressure pump then it will never fire. The pump, timing, and compresion all have serious contributions to these engines.

Yea, I can fix that.....

I think you have it!  That's where we'll start.  Thanks!
