If a person tells you they want what you have for sale ,dose that mean they are buying it or just want it.!!!!!! Why tell someone you want something if you are not going to pay for it !!!!!! Thought for the day ! Thanks for sharing .

Fred, down here in Okla, we have discovered that "good-money" (deposit) usually tells the true story !!!
Used to be a mans word was his bond, but that does not seem to apply any longer...

If I tell some one that I Want it I leave an erenist money deposite to hold till I get back with the purchase price. If no money then its just a wish. and we all know how valauable a wish is.

I agree with Boogerowen,in that a hand shake or a mans word is his bond and by golly that's how I still deal! There are still lots of folks that are very trustworthy, but there are also many that are not. That's the sad part, but true. Rick

I am one to honor a mans word. However, I usually don't take the risk that the guy I "want" or plan on buying something from will be as trustworthy if I don't know him, so I'd put some money down on an item. When I say I want something though, I usually say it in the context that, hey, thats really neat and I'd really like to have it, but I CANT afford it. lol

If I have something to sell, tell me you want it and I'll say pay for it by xxx date. After then, first buyer with cash will get it. Deposits? No way. I don't charge them, don't give them. Got burned on new windows in my house. Paid 1/2 down, never saw the contractor again. He filed bankruptcy before I could sue him...

I guess the word "want" depends on the person. When I say I want it, I want it. Not wish, maybe or think about it, I want it.

Here's how I buy tractors long distance, after the negotiating is done. I send them a check for 1/2 of the purchase price, and a written agreement, that if I don't show up by such a date, I no longer have claim to the tractor, or the money. Most of the time folks say oh don't worry about it, just get here when you can, and I'll take the money then. I send it anyway, I hear too many stories, some on here of, "how long do I wait, even if it is paid in full, before the buyer never shows?" I feel like it is my responsibility to be clear with the expectations, and make the seller feel comfortable with me. More than once I will show up with the other half in cash, and the guy will say, I haven't even cashed your first check yet. Knock on wood, it has never been a problem yet.

This gentleman I had the pleasure of meeting some years ago. His advice to his kids." DON"T TRUST ANYONE!!!!" The next thing he taught them. " GET THE MONEY FIRST " I thought it all makes sense. One of his kids told me when he was 5yrs old his dad put him up on the dresser, then said jump, I will catch you, so he did. His dad steped aside and let him fall. He said my dad looked down at me and said, Don' trust anyone! I can say, these kids of his are to get the better side of deal from. I still trust a mans word if he appears to be solid. Ya gotta cover your butt.

I have in the past and still do buy, sell, and other business on a mans word. I have hauled many things for people I have never met in the past ten years and I have never lost a nickel yet. I think for the most part, people involved in collecting and restoring are quite honorable. Now don't get me wrong I did have one deal with an old forum member that needed a little assistance from a county attorney in OK.

"I want that" assuming "that" is for sale, is the start of the discussion of price and delivery. Otherwise it's just idle blather. LOL

Went to buy a motorcycle from a small shop years ago. The owner told his daughter to fill out the paperwork and she said "those two boys said they were coming to get it today." His reply in a slow drawl was "Well they didn't leave no money with me." I still have the motorcycle.

Now Fred, maybe just maybe when this person told you that he wants this item that you have for sale he expected you to just give it to him. LOL

I just "want" Fred to treat me as good as he is this week, all the time!
When we are together and we "want" lunch, I always pay!
If I "want" to go somewhere with Fred I have to show up early or he will leave without me!
I guess I don't understand the question...Harvey

I think we all WANT things that we can't buy. I understand that it is aggravating to have something for sale and have to put up with some of the stuff that people put through themselves... but I think it just goes with the territory. I doubt anyone goes around doing things like that just for fun.

For me, if I want something, it means I will get it as soon as I find if. On the other hand, if I would like to have it, it means only that. Would like to have but probably never will.
