I was just wondering on the older machines that have that tube shape with a cap cold starting aid how do they or how did they work. did they use carbide or somthing.

Either was sold in a small capsule like a pill but larger , this was dropped into the holder and then when top was screwed down the capsule was punctured.  
 It has been replaced with the spray can for manual application or like on my FD5 a electric solenoid and a bottle like a propane torch bottle with either that is dispensed .

ok thanks I knew the newer ones had the can I just never knew how the old one worked almost all the hd5 and early hd6 had them
