1958 D17 gas:

What could cause my engine to rev extremely high?  I was pulling it out of the barn yesterday at about half throttle, and it suddenly revd VERY high, don't know how high, because I don't have a tach, and I immediately shoved the throttle back to idle.
The oil pressure gauge pegged, and now I hear a whining noise that wans't there before.  I am hoping that noise is the generator bearings and not the engine.

Is there supposed to be a return spring on the carb?  Mine does not have one.

I had this engine completely overhauled in late 2010, and it has 95 hours on it since the overhaul.

Thanks,
Roscoe

I agree. Sounds like it could be linkage hanging up or a possible govenor problem..

Well, crap.  So much for wishing it is something simple, like a missing throttle plate spring.

thanks for the replies.   I am still hoping that I didn't trash the engine...

Sounds like the gov. weights broke and the noise you hear is timeing gears where weights went through them.   MACK

Mine took teeth off all the gears when my weights came apart and wouldn't run at all. Pull the distributor so you can see what's going on. Cross your fingers. You might get off easier than I did.
