Hello Everyone,
This is my D17 that has been sitting 10 years.  Muffler does not seat well in manifold and rain seeped in around it and I ran it.  When we realized what had happened we backed it into spot in barn and parked it.  Intentions were to rebuild it with my dad but he passed away the following year and I have neglected it.  Debating on getting rid of it or fixing it.  I am no mechanic, and I have no power in the barn are my biggest concerns.  221826  is stamped on the plate in front of shifter.
Thanks

Yes there is water in oil

Water in the oil from it seeping down the muffler, or water in the oil from a bad head gasket?   Either way, if it's still loose, both should not be a major fix, the head gasket being more work but still easily handled by most guys who can turn a wrench and ask questions from the experts on here.   If it were me, I would fix it or find someone to fix it.   For one, it was something you and dad had together.   Recently loosing my dad, I understand now more then ever the significance of things like that.   Secondly, you have a D17, which has a power director so you already have four more speed ranges then a WD45.   Not familiar with the differences in all the series, but you most likely have power steering which some WD45's have but most don't.

If you're thinking of selling, it's hard to price a nonrunner.   You yourself know what you have but anyone else that may be a buyer doesn't and they don't know if you have potential tranny issues, power director issues, hydraulic issues, engine issues etc because you can't test anything.   So you're gonna be lucky for someone to give you more then scrap price.  I think it's worth more based on the condition of the sheetmetal and what I can see of rear tires, but you'd probably be lucky to get 800-1000 as it sits.   Most likely, someone is gonna offer you 500-750.   I paid 1600 for a d17 that didn't run but I did know the motor was loose and it was a series 4 so you have live hydraulics etc, so they are worth alot more.   And I lucked out as I cleaned the carb and gas tank, put a battery and some gas in and it fired up after sitting for 13 years.

I would keep it and get it fixed up.   If the water got down from the muffler, I would loosen the drainplug and get all the water out and leave the oil in if it isn't milky, get it running, warm it up and then change the oil and other fluids and away you go.

Good luck and keep us posted.

I'd keep it, even with few mechanical skills it should be possible to fix and keep running. Who knows this may be the project that gives you the confidence in your mechanical ability. You can always take your time and fix it little by little. Or invite a friend with some experience with tractors over to give you some guidance every now and again. Just my 2 cents worth. btw, looks like a great tractor to me.

Someone here can pretty much walk you through anything you need to do to get it running. One thing to remember is these old tractors were designed with the idea that the guy who was a better farmer than mechanic could do just about all of his own service and repair work with basic hand tools.

The serial number is on the torque tube, or bell housing, what ever you call it. right behind the carburetor side, below the air cleaner.  Will start with D17....  If you are really planning to get rid of it, I may be interested depending on what series it is.

Thanks,

Anthony

Thanks for the reply's.  I guess I have some thinking to do.  Sounds like non running it may be worth more in parts. I am not looking forward to moving this no matter what I decide.  My Dad left me with some projects.

Donkey, I personaly would advise you to keep the tractor, but I also know how the economy is at this point in time and it may very well be that you need to sell.

If you decide to sell, I would be very interested in purchasing your tractor...

I'd keep it! If you don't want to tackle it there's bound to  a competent mechanic in your area.I you don't want to spend the money now just drain the water out and let it set. Does the rad hold water or is it leaking down?

I NOTICED THE HUDSON ALSO. NICE LOOKING D17. WHAT OTHER TREASURES YOU HAVE HIDDEN AROUND THERE?

Posted By: donkey
Date Posted: 12 Feb 2012 at 10:10pm
That is about all I would consider treasures.  30 x 60 building, Dad and I built the building on a shoe string budget and then he filled it.  Not junk but not American Picker quality unfortunately.

Might do a quiz here on the forum. There is a good possibility someone on this forum is close enough to you that for the right persuasion might be willing to come give you a hand and some hands on pointers/training.
