Is there a proper way to mix hard and soft timing gears on a 301 diesel engine. I thought I remember that it could be done one way, maybe using a hard driver and a soft driven? I have an engine apart that has a bad crank and cam gear. The idler, hydraulic drive and the FIP gear all look really good. Can I put a hard crank and cam gear in this engine and reuse the other originals? The camshaft is worn out and I am considering installing the later camshaft that uses the bolt on gear. Is there a soft cam gear made that has the recessed counterbore that will match up with a later camshaft that uses the bolt on gear? Is there a hard 1" wide crankshaft gear available? I am working on a 180.

I thought any 301 that had a hydraulic pump driven off the engine had hard gears due to the extra power draw?  Meaning that the combine engines generally had the soft gears.  Just something that kind of rings a bell in my head like I heard it once a while ago.  Maybe someone can clear this up.

Soft gears were used up to a certain point in time and then they became hard for longer life.....made no difference what the application was. I have mixed hard and sot gears for 30 plus years and have never had a problem. You do whatever you want.
