Make sure you know what the cost is to re-power the tractor and add that to the purchase price.

There was one in Fairfield for $3500 a couple of years ago....wonder if it is the same one? I think I would rather have a true AC machine and not a rebadged Steiger.....

Yeah, they don't seem to be popular with the Allis collectors. Saw one sell a couple months ago for just under $5000, probably was the same one that sold for $5700 at an online auction, not sure about that. It ran ok, but tires were fair to poor and they can get pretty expensive to replace. Quite a few early Steigers on the market the last few years so why buy an orange Steiger other than it looks nicer than the pale green ones?

They had a nice purr to them, but that was while the engines were in good shape...
many were repowered with cat or cummins inline 6 engines... Seen one that had a detroit stuffed in it, a V12. They lacked the better componants that Steiger was using for their own tractors as what several have said... But they still do a lot of work... if they are still running.
8000 sounds kinda high unless it is exceptionally good.

There is one on Yesterdays Tractors for 4500.00......the 555last Cummins has a real bad reputation.

The 555 didn't have the best longevity and didn't like being lugged alot. There has been several discussions on the 555 Cummins and they aren't popular by any means. As said before, most have been repowered with CAT or Detroit's.

The newest of these tractors is 34 years old. If they are still running good, with the original 555 Cummins, I don't know why you would be afraid of it ?

Lets beat this horse one more time. The 440 is a steiger bearcat 2, in that day the demand for a tractor that large was small, and the cost for engineering would have been high. Steiger did want an identical tractor and either did allis. The only major changes were the engine and the grill. As far as the 555 it was like the CAT in the fact that it did not tolerate lugging or over rev. There are thousands of the 555 still in operation, fire, construction, bus and are very popular in boating. I would not be afraid of the 440 if I knew how it had been run. I deliver fuel to engine test facilities, and have seen the way they are tested now, all the old timers at these test cells say that current testing goes way beyond that of 30 or 40 years ago, they will all tell you that they have to idiot proof today's engines. That being said my last truck had a C-15 cat which many have proclaimed to be the worst cat ever, had that one for almost 8 years, it only went back to the dealer 2 times for the air cond and a front axle spring with the overhead run at that time. You might think it had an easy life, It did if hauling const. sites, short runs, and propane delivery at 37 below. It was traded by my company for tax reasons not that it was shot.
