I own a 1980 AC 175D that has an intermittent electrical/starting problem. About 20% of the time when I push the starter switch I get a presumably ... solenoid click, but no starter engagement. When I push the starter switch the second time the starter engages ok. The amp gauge shows about a 15 amp draw when the starter doesn't engage..only the click... as compared to about half that draw when the starter does engage. I have cleaned the battery terminals a few times until I noticed the 15 amp draw, suggesting that it is probably not a battery problem but a "short" somewhere? I'm inclined to suggest that I have a solenoid going...or something going in the clutch switch... but this is only a wild guess on my part. I have had the original equipment starter rebuilt a number of years ago, using heavier duty components...so I was told, and it engages solidly without hesitation when starting the engine. The tractor is used as a "chore" tractor and during the feeding season it is started 4-6 times per day. Oh, it has never failed (or just clicked) when attempting a cold start. The problem has only occurred when warm. Suggestions would be appreciated.

If you could isolate the solenoid after the tractor is warmed up and power it with a separate known good wire and switch, you might find out if it's the solenoid or something in the switches or wiring.

We had this same thing happen to are 190 and it was the solenoid.

Four things come to mind.
Solenoid is going bad.
Bad connections from battery to starter including the stsrt push button.
Push button is bad.
Bad battery.
2 and 4 can be eliminated without cost as you can clean all the connections and have the battery load tested.

It probably is the solenoid, although I just had a similar problem with my D17IV not too long ago. I had loaned the tractor to my brother in law for the last 20 years, and when I got it back last spring, everything worked fine. However, the starter would occasionally act up, and not spin. Finally, it wouldn't go at all. I pulled the inspection plate at the bottom of the housing, and the entire clutch cavity was packed with nuts, fibers and all kinds of goodies. I literally had a huge pile on the ground by the time I cleared most of it out. Anyway, I pulled the starter, and it was all the crud built up around the Bendix that was locking things up, but not consistently. I cleaned everything out, and it was good to go.
However, if you haven't loaned you tractor out for 20 years, yours is probably the solenoid.

The solenoid has two sets of winding's , one for pull in and one for hold in , the high draw is the pull in , the contact within the solenoid is not working right and the contact point is probably burnt some . A old time fix was to turn the post around inside the rear cover as only one side of the stud ends up getting burnt. On older solenoids the ground to it was external to the unit , on newer systems the unit grounds through the starter brushes.

I had something similar only there was now power at all the start would work then not work we took the start out and the repair guy tested it was all right put it back in and it did the same thing the housing around the starter was dirty from and the starter would not ground out

Thanks for all the help/tips. I started to look at the wiring and switches this afternoon. Nothing found so far. It was right on que this afternoon after 4 successful starts today.. I got a click on the fifth try.... hit the switch again and she fired right up.
