| I have a 59 D17 that needs a new exhaust manifold. What's the best one to get and the best place to get it. It is all original, paint and all as I got it from the prpporiginal owner years ago. I've been looking at manifolds in various places but don't see one like mine. The ones I see are either the one for wd, wd45 and early D17 with 3/8 studs and the bolt on muffler, or the one for the later D17's like series IV with the screw in muffler and the 7/16 studs. Well mine happens to have 7/16 studs and the bolt on muffler. Can I use the one for the early tractors by boring out the stud holes in the manifold or do I have to go with the later one and buy a screw in muffler? |

What you probably have is a late Series II, which I have one that is guaranteed to be original, it has a the smaller muffler and the screw in manifold. This is what you should buy. In all my research I think now days you will have to buy a threaded adapter, or many of them come with them. It may be possible that the original small diameter muffler simply fits inside the threads, I have not gotten to that yet on mine. The parts book doesn't show a threaded adapter, but makes reference to a pipe exhaust p/n 70234541 which I think is the adapter. The new threaded manifold was used effective with tractor S/N 320001

| Ok, I took it apart today. It has the bolt on muffler with no threads in the manifold but it has the 7/16 studs. I don't know about the series 1 or 2 stuff, but the serial no is 25xxx and it has the full flow oiling system. I'm going to replace 4 of the studs but only one is really bad. Thank God or someone for the 7/16 studs as they all turned without twisting off. So am I understanding right that a manifold is available that uses the 7/16 studs and don't use the screw in muffler? |

I did this on my early d17. New made in the usa VINSON manifold for 17 IV or 170 allis, Threaded one. Use a 1 1/2 inch "BLACK" pipe hardware store. Cut it in half so the there is only threads on one end. clean up the cut so there is no Burr left. Use a CASE VAC stanly ca3 muffler it is the same dementions body as a wd45 or early 17 one and has a 1 15/16" inlet that slips over the threaded pipe. This muffler has a block off plate in it's middle. I used a hole saw and a couple of drill extensions to cut it out. The muffler still burned the paint off where it was at. Worked good for me.
