I have the pan off my D17 and was wondering if by chance it is possible to replace the rear main from underneath without having to split the tractor?  My dad said he used to have a special tool for doing this on a Minneapolis Moline U.

No harder than it is to split these ol girls, you will spend far less time in the long run, and it will hold better if you split it, and pull the flywheel.  While you are not really suppose to, at that point you can change the bottom half fairly easy without pulling the pan or the rear main cap down, but you have to be careful you don't glue everything together.  That also depends on how the old one was glued in, some just won't come out in one piece, others that were poorly done, come out fairly easy.

If the upper half of the rear seal has the OEM bolts in it, they cannot be removed without hitting the crankshaft flange. Sooooo, you have to cut them off and replace with shorter bolts if you try it without removing the crank from the engine.

Dr. Allis,

I guess I have always been lucky someone else put shorter bolts in, I never knew the bolts would not clear the crank, I know they wouldn't come out of the seal holder, but once all three are loose, the whole thing comes out.  I can certainly see where longer bolts would preclude the change.

Thanks,

Anthony
