Do the brake pistons in the hyd pto clutch have a brake pad or brake material boneded to them? I am working on a 185. Pto won't stop turning, checked pressure-250psi. I can stop it with load on the shaft, but brake won't hold. Pulled one piston out, orings look good no brake material on end of piston. Picture in service manual looks like a brake pad on end of piston.

So I quess I need to replace brake pistons. AGCO will probally want a tractor payment for them.

AGCO had a service bulletin years ago that recomended removing the return spring from each brake piston to make the PTO brake more effective. The downside of that is, that IF the brake pad comes off (like yours did) and the spring missing, the piston will still stroke farther than it should and rub metal to metal and ruin the rotating clutch housing inside. If you choose to eliminate the spring, I'd recomend squeezing the spring collasped in a vise and use a torch on two sides to heat the wire red and let it cool. Then install it like normal and you've lost the spring pressure but still have the coils for a depth stop. Tractors equipped with 540/1000 pto have more PTO brake issues than straight 540 tractors because the clutch is spinning faster and makes it harder to stop.

The most cause for worn brake pads are worped clutch seperator plates or trying to stop a load. MACK

When shutting down a PTO driven implement with no over running clutch (a blower for example) we always just pulled the PTO lever about half way off. This disengages the PTO, but doesn't apply the brake. Let the implement come to a stop, then pull the lever all the way down. Doesn't wear the brake that way. We've always done this with our 185 and the PTO and brake work like new so far!

Priced brake pistons today, they will be over $200 each after ups charge. We bought this 180 used and the pto would slip, I had a 185 parts tractor so I swapped pto clutch asy. the 185 clutch does not slip but with cold oil it won't stop turning. I may run till oil gets hot and see what happens. I also priced brake disc for 7000, over $400 for set of 4. Anyone know of aftermaket source for 7000 brake disc?
