Personally I think the gas and the diesel are very reliable engines.  The diesel is far more expensive to work on if it breaks, but if it runs good, starts good, pulls good, and doesn't have blue or white smoke, you should be fine.

Get them BOTH! you can always sell off what you decide you don't want. Those don't come along everyday. "They" say that those buda's gave little trouble if warmed and cooled properly, before and after use.

The Buda diesel has a reputation if cracking blocks and sinking liners. Most likely hastened by shutting the engine down too soon. They have more pulling power than the gas. Agree with Orange, you will really appreciate the diesel when it comes time to fill the tank. Maintenance is more crritical (and expensive) with the diesel and they are more expensive to repair/replace worn engine parts.
I had a D17 and D19 diesel and both were brutes and very fuel efficient; loved the power, however do not have enough jobs here for them to be worked periodically.
If you can't afford both, the diesel is a better choice (if it is in decent condition).

Well I guess my opinion is a little different. The 226 gas if just about bullet proof, parts are available and compared to the 262 diesel they're a bargin.
I have a D19 diesel and it's a sweet running motor, and the gas motor in a D19 is a real fuel hog, but in a D17, the gas 4 cylinder is as good on fuel use and power as the 6 cylinder diesel.
When you look at potential problems and costs to repair and a scarce supply of parts for the diesel it makes the gas a much better long term choice.

Never ran a D17 diesel but I have a series IV gas that starts every day in the winter down to - 10 with a pull of the choke.  VERY reliable and parts are easy to find.  A diesel is more collectable because fewer were made.  Series IV with factory 3pt I'd say you can't go wrong either way especially if they were well cared for  Good luck!

The diesel is a fine engine.  Warm it up and cool it down.  People treated them like a gas and gave them a bad reputation.

Friend of mine had a D17 diesel, and loved it, especially the economy of it. I've got a gasser and like it, too. Personally, I'd buy the diesel as long as everything about the engine seemed to be on the up and up. Check em both out as far as everything else goes, such as jumping out of gear, hydraulics and lift arms working, gauges working, tire condition, power director function, and so forth, and base your decision on that. Just my advice. Good luck! Darrel

I have both, and can confirm that the gas does use a lot more fuel.  I do like it though for in the colder weather easy starts and for when I am going to use it with more frequent starts and stops of the engine.  So, I concur, buy them both.
