DIY. Been along time so I don't remember if you can dig the old stuff out without removing the ram.If not....polish the paint and rust off the lift arm end, remove the packing nut(you did try tightening them up more first?).Remove unit and take fitting out of housing.Use appropriate screwdriver to move snap ring to other smaller grove and pull ram out of housing.Remove old packing, clean, install new packing, lube and shove ram back in then pry snap ring back to big groove and install packing nut. Tighten as needed.....and will usually need more tightening after some use. TAH DAH!!
If rams are badly pitted, find better ones because packing won't hold.

Remove nut with lift part way up then push down on lift arms a few times and that should push the old packing out. Put new packing in with lip to oil then just snug nut.  MACK

Sometimes the packing can be stuck pretty good and the only way to remove it without risking damaging the rod is to pull the rod.

Most of the WD45s you see have badly rusted or pited rods. I bought a set of rods from AGCO sometime in the mid '90s. The dealer told me they were the last two in any of AGCO's warehouses. So if the dealer was right, I may have the last new rods to be had. I'm sure some dealers still have some NOS though.

Lucas, so easy even a caveman (and I) can do it!
