I have an Allis Chalmers 6080 that my mechanic says the nut has come off the pinion in the rear end.  Anybody experienced this?  If so I need advice as to what to do where to get parts?  What kinda repair costs might I expect and what kind of a job is it to fix this?  Any other recommendations would be helpful? Thanks.

If your really, really, really lucky, you stopped it when you heard/felt it. I have took the top plate off and restarted and tightened the nut, but I have seen them where they run it for a long time wondering what it was and had to pull the whole rear end apart(separate from trans, pull final drives, pull ring and pinion) and replace the shaft and bearings. Not cheap,.

Any idea on cost? My mechanic said that he would also have to pull the engine. Is this true?

No, you don't have to pull the engine.  MACK

I have all the parts you will need to fix it. I am not sure why he would need to take the engine out to fix the rearend.
