How do any of you guys charge 8 volt batteries ? My Wife got me a Diehard charger/maintainer for Christmas it has a 2amp12volt setting and a 4amp 6volt setting.I know this has been asked here before but I can`t seem to find it.

I would charge mine on the 6 volt charge.

When my G wasn't charging, I used the 6 volt setting on the charger a couple times. It worked fine.

My battery guy said he could get an 8 volt charger.

You could use the 12V setting but add 5 power diodes(50V,10A) in series.This will reduce the 12V to properly charge the 8 volt battery.

The 6V setting shouldn't have enough 'juice' to charge the 8 V battery. If it did it'd 'cook' the 6 volt batteries..

All depends on who in China designed and made the charger....

My charger is probably 50+ years old and not made in China. The 6 volt setting works fine. I don't question it, I just use it if the battery gets down to where it won't turn the engine over.

If you charge overnight on 6 volt setting you wouln't overcharge. Then set the charger on 12 volt 2 amp it will push 4 or 5 amps into it on that setting for a short time. be careful not to let it there long it will cook it.

If you have a volt meter you can use that to help prevent from overcharging.

I have a variostat wired in that i can set the voltage anywere that i need. If you can set the charger voltage 1 or 2 above the battery voltage and it takes a couple amps you can sometimes restore older batteries.

If you just want a 'trickle' charger , find a 9 volt 'wall wart' style ac/dc adapter good for 1-2 amps.An 8 volt battery like 8.8 volts as a 'float' charge.

Nowadays you can buy '9 volt AC adapters' for $5-$6. Better deal than the $60 'battery tenders' which while they have a microcomputer in them aren't really worth money.

As Tuck said, you can charge an 8V Battery on the 6V range setting if your charger is equipped with the 6V range. The reserve will not be high in the Battery, but should be active enough to start the Tractor. I've been successful in the past charging 8 volt versions that way.

I use a 6 volt charger o charge my 8volt battery just like I use a 12volt charger to charge my 13.8 batteries for my trucks.
