That is my favorite Ford body style. I've got a 69 ford half ton 4X4 that I completely re-did about 25 years ago, right down to a rebuilt, warmed up 390. I guess I sort of out grew the hot-rod nostalgia a few years ago and gradually quit driving it. It was easier and more comfortable driving the newer vehicles. Now my 14 year old son got it going again a couple months ago, and it is quite exciting to see his enthusiasm when he is driving it! Good luck with yours. Darrel

Interesting project. What makes it a "High Boy"? better get a tetness shot before you do much with it. Looks like an old Dana full time front axle.

All of the 3/4 ton 4X4 Fords in the late 60's through the mid 70's came from the factory with high clearance, thus they were nick-named "high boys" Darrel

I read an article about the highboy's in one of my off road mags a few months ago and most of the few highboy's that were sold went to logging companies in the pacific northwest. Basicly they had a factory four inch lift that coupled with fords huge fender wells of that era enabled them to clear the very popular(at that time) 38.5 inch Gumbo Monster mudder and Ground Hawg. I also read that they usually had and emblem that said highboy inside that shiny peice the left front fender. You can see it in the picture. I've only seen one true highboy here in Missouri. Was pretty cool though.

Well guys here is the plan , I got this 69 f-250 camper special couple months ago, has originall 55k miles and a near perfect body. Some minor places of rust, factory air and is explorer edition. Im going to use this body on the high boy and keep it a 4spd truck with a hi-po 390 engine I have in shop. Got a lot of work to do but I think in the end it will look good. I'm real parcel to the orange truck kinda looks like persian orange...........

I've owned 3 styles of ford trucks and always thought the 67-72's were the best looking. I had a '70 F-250. I totalled it being young and stupid. If I ever get another it will be when I have a dedicated garage space, but I do plan to get another. I've seen several highboys but they are somewhat rare. That orange '69 looks mint. Please keep us updated with project pics. You can still get a lot of parts through LMC truck.

Nice truck! Are the inner fenders intact? they usually rusted out where the hood hinge bolted on. I had a 70 F100, Ranger XLT with factory air, I loved that truck. I've had a lot of Ford trucks but that's my favorite body style. I'm with sks72107 I thought the true high boys had the Tcase that connected to the trans with a driveshaft. Up to 77 Fords were all tall 4wds. My second favorite body style is the 57 - 60 they look mean as a 4wd too.

Highboys were made from 67-77.5. Ford never called them a Highboy thats just what people nicknamed them. Ford never made a "HighBoy" model truck.
They have a divorced a transfercase.
They didn't really have a factory lift kit. The divorced t-case caused the front of the truck to set higher than normal so to fix the problem they added a 4inch lift block in the rear to level it up.
They had a narrower frame than normal also.
The 77.5 and later trucks have a married transfercase.
Ford is all I drive. I have a 73 F100..79 F150..and 79 Bronco.

That truck has a different frame from the F250 4x4 so none of the mounts will line up.

The 4x4 truck has F-250 chasis with a F-100 body on it now, why would the other 69 F-250 truck I have not work ? Previous owners told me years ago body rusted out and the F-100 body was put on that frame.

I can't be for sure on that...measure the frames. HighBoy 4x4 frames from 73-77.5 are different than the f100..f150..f250 frames from 73-77.5. B/c of this you have to do some fabrication to make a non-highboy bed fit a highboy. Pretty sure this goes for the 67-73 Highboys also...may be wrong though.
I deal with 73-79 trucks the most so I know them alot better.

I'm a BowTie man so I really don't know, but, why would Ford build a completely different frame or body for such an application. Although Ford has done odd things before......

Buddy of mine ran into the problem of different width frames on his 73 high-boy. He tried to put a box off some ford close to the same year, only different configuration, i.e. off of either a half ton or else a 2wd, and the high-boy frame was narrower. Don't remember the exact details, but he did get it to work with some hole drilling or something. That was back in 1985, and he still has the high-boy and it still looks like a million bucks!! Darrel

While the frames are different I think the frame to cab mounts were in the same general locations, but I had a 70 F100 2wd and a 72 F350 2wd and I'm sure you could have swapped the cabs. Don't have any idea about bed mounts.

I did a cab swap with a cab from a narrow frame onto a wider frame. The front cab mounts and core support lined up with frame. To hold the rear of the cab I made a crossmember with the mount holes to line up with the cab I was using.
The '78 F-250 frame that originally held this cab was about 6 inches narrower than the '79 frame I put it on. The front perches on the '78 frame stick out farther than the perches on the '79 frame. I started at the firewall and worked the cab from there then started at the rear of the frame and worked the box forward. The box I used came from a '78 that had a divorced transfer case and wide frame.

You need to look at the wheelbase under that camper special, it is also different than the High boy, Drive shafts will be different and so on, nothing will swap including the beds only the cabs are similar but even a 2wd cab is different from a 4x4.
I fought that very scenario on both a 1976 Ford and a 1969 Dodge. As for collector value the Camper Special was a limited run and if you restore it you will have something.

Looks like you'd be better off trading the camper special off and finding a correct cab, or would it be possible to find a 4x4 frame that the CS would fit on. Still odd that Ford would make so many cobinations.
I did put a 66 Chevy cab on an 85 frame. Frames were real close in width but the cab mounts were in different locations. I used a 1/4" think flat plate and bent it to fit over the tranny bell and drilled 4 holes to match the cab and mounts. Then I cut the 4" body lift spacers I had in half and used them as spacers as needed between the plate and cab. Used standard body mounts between plate and frame. Did the same for the radiator support and rear. Worked out real well and this spaced the cab just high enoug to use outboard mounted fuel tanks on the 85 frame. I was pleased with the results then, but now if I had it to do over I'd likely cut down the frame mounts and rivet them in place on the frame I used in the right location and height. More work but I'd think better finished results.

Some of you may have seen this in the other forum thread.
This 2 wheel drive 84 to this,
Still an 84 but with a 90 front grill, 350 Vortec engine and 4X4.
Love those 4 door cabs. Thing is I like the older body style and interior so much better and to find something decent to suit out taste's we have to build up what we want. I could use about 4"s of lift under it for looks but it rides so good now and I'll be pulling trailers and hauling wood. I don't want to mess up the ride and loading height.
Good luck with whatever you do with your project and don't forget to let us see the progress.

Welcome to the world of Ford...everything thing you think will fit probably doesn't. When I rebuilt the 351w in my buddies bronco we fount out some 351w have standard rings and some have metric. We got the metric ones in the rebuild kit....they didn't fit.
