when i try to start it the starter gear doesnt seem to engage into ring gear. the gear doesnt seem to be worn too bad. how far should these two gears engage? wondering if it may be a starter problem before i split the tractor and replace ring gear?

It could be a starter problem. Does it grind or just not engage at all? The bendix might be dirty or need a spring. Take the starter out and clean it up. Don't oil the bendix, use graphite if anything.

the bendix is a wobble stick with springs on it. I have had the springs break. Check that first. Also look at the ring gear. THen bar the motor 90 degrees and look at the gear. Compare the wear... If you want to know if its the ring gear, just crank the motor 90 degrees and hit the starter button again to see if it works. The motor always stops on the same few teeth on the ring gear and they do wear out.

Have a good look at your ring gear through the starter motor hole. I had many bad spots on my ring gear and had to turn the engine manually to find a gear position that would work. Eventually I replaced the ring gear and had the starter bendix replaced.

Sounds to me like Steve is on the right track, just cuz it "runs ok" on the bench dosn't mean much you may have to take it someplace and have it looked at and fixed.

Sounds to me like it might be a combination of both. We got tired of pull starting our C so we split it and found the ring gear worn. I worked it off the flywheel and flipped it over and reinstalled it(warmed it up in the oven first). Have had the gear on the bendix go bad as well but that was on my Fordson Dexta so parts were much more expensive, so that got welded.

YEP, thats it... look at the springs and see if they are broke or just loose. Install a new nut, or tackweld / repair/ etc.

I have had these bolts break or backout and cause the problems.
