I bought a new vr for a d17d 1958.I need to know if i have to repolarize the gen.If i do then i was told you can damage things if you do it wrong. It depends on what type of field grounding you have.Whatthe way to tell if you have an internal ground or external ground through the vr. Thanks for any insight,John

Polarizing a generator is no big deal.  Momentarily touch a live wire from the battery to the A (armature) post on the generator.  You need to repolarize a generator when you change your system from positive ground to negative ground.  Otherwise it usually isn't necessary.

The last VR that I purchased came with instructions on how to polarize the Genny.
I always just "flashed" the terminals. however the instructions sheet said to hold the wire on the terminal for several seconds. The one VR that I replaced 2 years ago didn't work after I flashed it. I talked to the dealer service tech and he said he has had them that required 2-3 flashes before they would work. I tred it again, several times, and it worked. Bob
