| The energy cell is there to create a swirl pattern in the combustion chamber and provide a clean burn of all the fuel in a cylinder. There is no maintenance for these needed unless the small orific in them gets blocked which is unlikely. They are replaceable from the outside by removing the 2 nuts on the studs and removing the caps and spacers in the head opposite the injectors. I think they require a special tool to grab them and remove them as they will be stuck in the head from carbon build up. They must also be lapped in when installing them so they seat and seal properly. |

Like Dave says, unlikely they need attention. Don't pull them out of the head unless absolutely necessary. I've seen them plugged with carbon or pitted really bad before. The older ones are threaded to remove them. I've made a puller out of a fine threaded bolt (don't recall the size). The newer ones are not threaded and likely the ones you have being a series IV. To remove them you have to remove the injector and punch them out through the injector hole. As everybody else has said, don't pull them or remove the covers unless you are very sure there's a problem with them. They are hard to get sealed back. They are also pretty expensive NOS. |
